They say you get what you pay for, typically in a derogatory way.  In some cases, that’s just not true.  Let me introduce you to something that not only has a cheap price tag, but better value than its traditional counterpart.

Water coolers don’t get a lot of thought from us.  It’s just that little plastic gurgling machine that sits in the corner of the office.  People are generally pretty apathetic to it.   If it’s owned, it cost a pretty penny.  If it’s rented, you’re constantly spending on the water jugs.  It’s a nuisance, especially since it’s up to you to balance how much water you need someone to carry into your building.  I had that job – it was annoying.

cheap water coolersWater coolers come in all shapes and sizes. Today, much of the market is switching to Point-of-Use water coolers (also called POU).  It’s estimated that about 30% of the domestic marketplace uses these kinds of coolers.

A POU cooler is a bottleless water cooler.

So why are office managers choosing bottleless coolers?  The majority of those making the purchasing decision look at the POU cooler because they’re cheaper.  Since there’s no need for bottles, and water bottle delivery, there’s less cost in ordering and storing water bottles.  It’s less concern for management too (now you don’t have to balance the water bottle count to your monthly budget).  Since the POU cooler connects right to your office water supply, the water is, well, endless.  There’s no storage.  Your water bill will go up slightly, but still way cheaper than ordering water jugs.

Quench is the largest bottleless water cooler company in America.  They have a large product line for different sized offices, from the 720, which is designed for use by 25 employees at a time, all the way to 800 (the heavy use free standing water cooler that’s better suited for outside events and heavy use).  These machines have filtration, including UV and reverse osmosis, which is very important for those areas that have less than adequate local water departments.

The following is the original description: Cat...

Be careful with a cheap water cooler.  There’s a lot you need to think about.  Is it a bottle water cooler?  They’re usually a couple bucks cheaper, but they have a high probability of getting germs into them because of the constant adding and removing of water bottles.  Not to mention when you change them you’re using your hands to hold the top (which ultimately gets placed into your water resovoir).  The germs only sit and grow.

Do yourself a favor and spend a couple bucks more and get a POU water cooler.  They’re closed source, meaning the germs don’t get it.  There’s no need for bottles.

It’s newer technology, but check it out.  It’s really the way the market is going.

A jet of cold drinkable water flowing out from...

It may not seem like an obvious solution but the addition of a water cooler rental to your office or business is a simple and effective way to please your clients, coworkers, friends and other guests.

The differences between water cooler rentals and a water cooler with replacement jugs are many. A water cooler rental allows you more freedom, you don’t have to keep track of invoices and order sheets for replacement jugs, you don’t have to be present to sign for deliveries all the time, there won’t be as much traffic in the building or the parking lot because a huge delivery truck won’t be blocking the entrances and exits, and, most importantly, a water cooler rental will provide cleaner and healthier water than the traditional water cooler. Your associates wil appreciate your consideration of their health as well as an unlimited access to the freshest, cleanest product available.

But most of all (and let’s face it – this is what any company is really interested in) is the cost.  Renting a POU water cooler is much cheaper in the long run compared to buying one.   Even if you manage to find a good deal, you still have to pay for installation and all the parts to get it into your water supply.  There’s also filters if you get a device that contains RO and/or ultra violet filtration.

POU stands for Point-Of-Use.  A point-of-use water cooler is a cooler that draws it’s water direct from the source, like your building’s own water supply.  This cooler connects to the pipes in your building, and draws from the already available water.

This is even better because a good POU water cooler will have filtration.  Tap water, which is already government regulated to the same standards as bottled water (or 5 gallon water jugs), will get an extra dose of filtration.  UV and reverse osmosis are two very popular filtration methods in POU coolers.  Depending on where you live, your local water plant may need a little more of one or the other.  The POU cooler can be balanced to provide the right filtration for your area.

How do can you tell a POU water cooler from a regular water cooler?  That’s easy.  No plastic bottle.

Photograph of mild fluorosis. Most noticeable ...

Sometimes adding technology to our everyday lives doesn’t have the desired effect. Case in point: adding fluoride to municipal water supplies. Many districts nationwide have either done this for years or are considering the possibility of adding fluoride to the water to help their citizens maintain healthy chompers. The citizens’ reaction has mostly been negative with many fearing adverse affects to their children’s health. While the

mineral plays a vital role in fighting tooth decay and keeping bones healthy, ingesting fluoride in excess can lead to damage especially in children’s teeth. When children have a chronic diet of fluoridated water, their teeth prematurely age and can turn brown and weaken, a condition known as dental fluorosis. There is a solution, however, that can help prevent this unsightly condition. By using a drinking water dispenser that contains a special filter it becomes easy to remove harmful minerals from your drinking water supply.

dirty water coolerDid you know those big 5 gallon water jugs are gigantic bacteria traps? Neither did I until I started doing some research after seeing a really dirty one the other day in my accountant’s waiting room. They were changing the cooler while I was sitting right next to it.  Not only did I get splashed, but I saw some pretty grimy stuff inside the cooler.  They didn’t seem to care.

I found out bacteria starts to grow in the 5 gallon water jugs the minute they are filled and stored in an unrefrigerated place. The companies that produce these plastic jugs supposedly don’t refrigerate them due to high costs.  Nice.

Once the bacteria starts to grow, it doesn’t really stop. Since most 5 gallon jugs sit in an open reservoir it’s easy for germs, dirt and debris to travel into the water supply. And since bacteria feeds off of fresh water the cycle doesn’t really end.

Another spot that bacteria sits is on the spigot of the water cooler. Imagine the number of germy hands that uses that spigot. And if that’s never cleaned off (and let’s face it – the odds are they aren’t), then more bacteria can be transferred into your water.

Another big reason to go with bottleless water coolers.  Health!  A POU cooler doesn’t have these issues.  I’m sold.

Did you know that the tubing your water cooler uses is important for the quality of your water?  Black tubing, which is more expensive and rarely used is a better tube for running the water out of your water source.  Sometimes this tubing can be quite long, especially if you’re running the water from a kitchen to the far end of your building.  The black tubing shields light and makes the water 99% less likely to grow bacteria.

Watercooler

Just think about how the water in a clear water cooler can really be affected by light, if POU coolers care that much about their little tubes!

POU coolers were big overseas, but now they’re finally making a significant dent in the United States.  It’s now estimated that about 30% of all water coolers in place in the United States are bottleless.  That’s a lot of environmental savings.  Look into a water filter system today.
